Hair | May 2006
Human hair is at the centre of how we perceive ourselves and how other people perceive us. Hair is at one in the same time much loved and cherished but also despised and unwanted. It engenders feelings of love and disgust in equal measures: long hair on a woman’s head attracts attention whilst hair on a woman’s leg or under her armpit is repulsive. The style and colour of our hair can symbolize everything we represent: our age, our interests, our gender, our attitudes, our social background even our nationality.
No matter how hard we try we are fighting a loosing battle with our hair. We have too much where it isn’t wanted and too little where it is wanted. My sculpture represents this loosing battle with our hair, it is a daily process and everywhere we go we leave it behind.
