Body | May 2006
An investigation into the fragmentation and objectification of the human body.
I approached this theme from five different angles: Body, Hair, Blood, Faces and Urine. Our body is seen fragmented with our own eyes. We are never able to see ourselves as a whole unless we look into a mirror. We see other people as a whole but not ourselves. In this series I have cast different parts of the body of another person and thus reversed the gaze. Some of them become moon-landscapes or surreal objects. In surrealism a cut- off hand often refers to the act of castration. The body of a woman is also very often fragmented by focusing on individual parts of the body such as eyes, breasts, lips etc., they are all objectified. I think this is fascinating and changes the way we look at ourselves entirely. Preservation, beauty, youth, aging and decay were all part and parcel of the themes addressed.
